On January 1, 2016, the Swatch Group began limiting the access of spare parts to watches and movements produced and owned by them. This cuts out the vast majority of independent watchmakers and repair/service centers. Shortly after this, the Swiss Competition Commission (WEKO) began to receive official complaints and was considering opening an official inquiry into the situation. They have made their official ruling and it's not good for the independents out there and, potentially, anyone making a new watch purchase going forward.

At Baselworld 2018, the new HeavyDrive technology was debuted. While not a new movement per se, this is a technology that is achieved via a new integrated circut (IC) and will not only allow designers and manufacturers to use heavier hands on these quartz movements, but also provide up to a 200% increase against shocks to the movement that would normally knock the hands out of alignment and cause a loss of accuracy.
